Choosing a Diamond
When buying a diamond there are four tips to follow and if you follow them
you will get a great gemstone. The four common factors that you need to check
before purchasing your diamond is the Cut, Clarity, Carat and the Color of the
diamond.
Let’s begin with the Cut; there are several different types of diamond cuts,
these are the round brilliant, the Marquise, Pear, Oval, Emerald, Baguette and
the Heart. Make sure the cut of the diamond is smooth along the edges.
Next is the clarity, you can check the clarity by looking at the diamond itself
using a magnifying glass. A good diamond will have a clear appearance to it with
little or no impurities. Make sure you check to see if the diamond is flawed on
the external portion too. If the diamond has any damages to the surface, it is
usually due to the cutting process done by amatuerish hands. Check the diamond
for internal flaws such as the presence of impurities, black or dark spots, clouds
in the diamond and fractures. Any of these will reduce the quality and value of
the diamond. Take your time to inspect very carefully when selecting a diamond;
after all, diamonds are forever.
As you may know by now, the weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat
is divided into 100 points; a diamond that is 75 points weighs 0.75 carats. Diamonds
today are weighed using the metric scale and is then converted to carats using the
Diamond Weight Device. Weighing of diamonds can be achieved using a micro-balance
weighing device which can measure up to 5 decimal point; this gives you an idea of
how valuable diamonds are. Generally, the heavier the diamond, the more expensive
the diamond is going to be.
Finally, the last factor to consider is the actual color of the diamond. A diamond
itself is 99.95% carbon; however, there are some chemical elements presence in the
diamond that can affect the color of the diamond, which is incontrollable. Nitrogen
turns a diamond yellow, boron will turn a diamond blue, natural radiation will turn
a diamond green and crystal irregularities will turn a diamond pink, brown and even
red. Depending on your choice, select a colour that you prefer but generally, the
common choice is colorless.
