Measuring Diamond Quality
You can be assured that when a diamond goes to get certified it is tested for quality.
Typically you want to know if the diamond is of high or low quality. It is very important
to know the four Cs-- cut, color, carat and clarity. Each of these things are determined to
test the beauty of the diamond. The way the diamond appears, the weight, the color all have
a bearing on the cut of the diamond.
The cut of the diamond is the most important way to test the quality. But in addition to that
there are the proportion of the diamond, the symmetry and the angles of the diamond to see
how it reflects. A very poorly cut stone with the facets out of alignment will come out as
a low quality precious stone
There are of course several different ideas on what the perfect stone will be but they cannot
be all of 100% perfect. In recent years there has been other attentions being paid to other
than the cut of the diamond to test the quality. There have been machines or viewers; they
can test for light leakage from the stone, light return and the proportion of the light.
These things now are factored into the testing of quality.
Each certification lab has its own ways or methods to test the diamonds’ quality and then
make their decision on certification. When you go shopping for a diamond, always ask to see
the paperwork or certification that comes with it. If the jewelry shops refuse to show you,
it simply means that the diamond you are inspecting does not have any quality certification.
Undoubtedly, certified diamonds are generally more expensive as the cost of certification
is passed on to the buyer.
